TASTING NOTE

Floral lift - violets, mulberry and blackcurrant fruits, warm spice and background roasted almonds characters.

Palate is medium weight, plush, textural and silky, showing fresh berry fruit characters, exotic spice and hints of anise.  Lingering sweet but fresh berry fruit with good acidity, the tannins are fine and smooth.

VINTAGE

Weather conditions during spring were wet and windy which had an impact on flowering and resulted in small crops. Cool and wet conditions continued into early summer, but thankfully the rain stopped around Christmas time to allow the fruit to start to ripen and to keep the disease at bay. Harvest started much later than average due to the cooler conditions. The 23 vintage wines are showing elegance and finesse, with fresh fruit flavours, fine tannins and good acidity.

VINEYARD

Sourced from Willunga 100's own estate vineyard 'Blindspot' in the sub-region of Blewitt Springs (McLaren Vale).  The vineyard was planted in 1934 and is dry grown.  The vineyard is North facing with an altitude 150m.

The soils of the vineyard are deep Maslin sand over a base of ironstone and clay.

WINEMAKING

Fruit was machine harvested, then destemmed into 5 tonne stainless steel fermenter for fermentation on skins for 8 days.  The wine was basket pressed off skins and transferred to 2 year old and older French Oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation.  The wine spent 9 months in oak before being racked and bottled.

REVIEWS

JancisRobinson.com - Julia Harding MW
18.5/20 Points

“My top-scoring wines (18 or 18.5) were Clonakilla (Canberra), Mount Pleasant (Hunter Valley), Langmeil, Henschke and Alkina (Barossa) and Willunga 100 (McLaren Vale). This new wine from Willunga was probably the finest demonstration of elegance in the entire line-up. It demolishes any tired stereotypes of beefy Australian Shiraz. As my note says, ‘More Burgundy than Rhône’.”95 Points GOLD

"From the estate vineyard in Blewitt Springs planted in 1934; 10 days on skins, then basket pressed; matured in French oak puncheons and demi-muids, mostly neutral with 30% 3-year-old barrels for 10 months. This opens somewhat darkly spicy, almost brooding, but with a little time, it strides out with a red-fruited gait, though without losing those agreeable spice notes of clove, cinnamon and allspice. Lithe and supple of texture, the sour brambly fruits are honed but unobstructed by oak, a bright pop of cranberry and dried cherry closing out. It’s a mid-weight shiraz of both poise and gravitas."
