The Tithing represents the pinnacle of Grenache in the Willunga 100 lineup, and given they are known for Grenache expectations are high. Expectations were not only met but exceeded with the Tithing one of the most complete and enjoyable Grenaches I’ve had from McLaren Vale.

A deep red in the glass with lighter hues towards the rim, the nose gives dark cherry, lifted baking spice and some savoury nuances. The palate has a delicious core of earthen dark cherry and grows in terms of fruit concentration, fine tannins fill every corner of the mouth and quality oak gives touches of richness and spice that are wonderfully integrated. The wine finishes with drying plum and dark cherry.

The Hundred792012014 Willunga 100 ‘The Hundred’ Grenache

93 points

The Hundred is produced based on select parcels of fruit from a single vineyard in McLaren Vale, the wine is un-oaked and shows how interesting and complex the unadorned version of the Grenache grape can be.

The nose starts with an ever so slight reductive note that blows off in seconds, strawberry and raspberry with pristine clarity sit on a backdrop of sweet stem and deli meats.

The palate gives flashes of juicy strawberry and a suggestion of sage and oregano. The tannins are soft and supple, with time on lees giving a complete and complex mouth feel. The wine finishes with fruit sweetness and will reward a few years in the cellar to show its more savoury side.

A winery that is known for their Grenache, and it’s not hard to see why when they produce an entry level wine at $22 as good as this.

Wild strawberry and dusty raspberry fruit on the nose, the palate is fruit forward initially with juicy raspberry fruit and sweet spice, but don’t be fooled, there is a lot more to this wine than generous fruit. The tannins are fine and framing, giving a sappy aspect that works well with the fuller red fruits and gentle baking spices. It is the slight earthiness on the finish that i enjoy most about the wine, it is this textural counterpoint that takes this wine to a level well above its price point.

Willunga 100 Shiraz Viognier_NV2014 Willunga 100 Shiraz Viognier

93 points

There was an addition of 5% Viognier that went into the blend, giving an ever so subtle richness to a satisfyingly brooding and mineral example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

The wine is a deep red in colour with purple hues towards the rim, the nose gives aromatic plum and dark cherry with a suggestion of earth, the palate has structure and drive well beyond its price point, dark berry fruits with top notes of plum and blackberry move seamlessly across the palate with drying tannins and raw cocoa giving great mouthfeel. The wine finishes with drying plum and general savoury flare.

Yet another great value wine in the current release lineup from Willunga 100, this is very much a Cabernet dominant rendition of the Cabernet and Shiraz blend that is uniquely Australian.

A classical Cabernet nose with cassis, mint and a touch of chocolate. The palate has bright blackberry and cedar on entry with spicy french oak giving a counterpoint to the earthen leathery aspect to finish.
